The Circuit Rider by Peter Busby

The Circuit Rider
I’ve been waiting to take this shot for over 2 years and have been checking the online NOAA river sensor in Hartford weekly. The Connecticut River reached the 16 foot minor flood stage on Saturday, but was still a few inches short of Old Bob’s nose when I arrived. The river has gotten close a few times in the last couple of years, but crested a few inches short of where I’ve wanted it. However, this time, I could literally see the puddles on the walkway expanding, raising about a quarter inch or so every 10 minutes. Took a few hours to reach what I’ve now found to be the magic height of 16.5 feet, which puts the water right where it looks like Old Bob is standing on the edge drinking. (I’m told horses don’t typically stand in the water when they are drinking, not sure if that is true) Have a lot of editing to do, ended up with about 700 shots from different angles.

Lensbaby Sweet 50 mounted on a Control Freak, f/4, variable ND Filter dialed down to obtain a 30sec exposure. Used waders to get the tripod out to the center of the stream.
